(RNN) – Grammy Award-winning singer Joe Cocker died Monday after a battle with lung cancer, according to a representative.

He was 70 years old. ITV first reported his death, citing a member of his management team. His agent, Barrie Marshall, told the BBC that Cocker was “simply unique” and “it will be impossible to fill the space he leaves in our hearts.”

The singer was known for his raspy voice and jarring movements during performances. In a performance on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1969, the producer hid Cocker behind a group of dancers to hide his flailing motions as he sang Feelin’ Alright.
